Lectors

Before Mass:
Prayerfully prepare the reading before you come to church.
  • If you cannot read as scheduled, please find a substitute lector, and let your partner know before Mass who will be substituting for you.
  • Arrive 20 minutes before the start of the Mass and sign-in. Make sure the Lectionary is on the Ambo, in the correct reading section.
  • Turn on the sound system: there is one button that needs to be turned on in the work sacristy.
  • When the deacon is present, he will process with the Book of the Gospels. If there is a Deacon, after signing in, return to the church to your pew.
During Mass:
The first lector gets the Lector Notes binder from the sacristy. He/she should read the theme and then go out to the church and obtain the number of the first song and it’s name and write them in the Lector Notes. He/she also needs to enter the name of the other lector. And if there is a deacon, he/she needs to write the deacon’s full name in the lector notes.
  • The first lector then goes out and sits with the choir and waits until the priest celebrant gives a signal from the back of the church that the lector is to begin. He/she then comes forward and reads the theme for the Mass and announces the first song. Be sure to pause when people are greeting each other. And pause slightly after announcing the song. Afterwards, he/she is to go to their pew.
  • If there is no deacon, the second lector processes with the celebrant and altar servers at the beginning of Mass. This lector processes with the Book of the Gospels.
  • The second lector proceeds directly to the altar and places the Book of the Gospels in the center of the altar. (Do not stop at the foot of the sanctuary steps.)
  • After placing the Book of the Gospels on the altar, immediately go to your pew.
  • After the Opening Prayer, the first lector approaches the altar, pauses at the foot of the steps, bows and goes to the ambo to read the First Reading.
  • At the end of the reading, look at the congregation and say, “The Word of the Lord.” Wait for the response from the congregation. Do not move until after a 10 second pause to allow the Word of God to resonate with the assembly.
  • As you leave the ambo, turn the page for the next lector, go to your pew, and pause at the bottom of the steps of the sanctuary. Bow your head to the altar and return to your pew
  • After the cantor, the second reader comes forward, bows, and proceeds to the ambo.
  • After the second reading is completed, pause and wait for 10 seconds before closing the book and putting it on the shelf in the ambo.
  • Proceed to the foot of the steps, bow your head to the altar, and return to your pew.
  • Continue to sing and participate in the Mass – you do not process out with the Word of God, since it is now in our hearts to be lived!
  • Before the Creed is completed, the second lector proceeds to the sanctuary, bows to the altar, and goes to the ambo to read the petitions for the Prayer of the Faithful. After the Prayer of the Faithful is over, the second lector returns to his/her pew.
  • At the end of Mass
  • After everyone has gone to Communion, the second lector proceeds to the ambo to read the announcements. After the announcements, the second lector can either return to his/her pew or remain at the ambo until after the last song is sung. .
  • After the presider has left and/or recessional song is complete, the second reader removes the Book of the Gospels from the ambo and returns it to the sacristy. This is done after the celebrant and altar servers have already processed to the back of the church.
  • If there is another Mass, place the Lectionary on the ambo and open it to the correct reading. If there is not another Mass, return all the books to the shelf in the sacristy.
  • Turn off the speaker system.

Reminders:
  • Wear “Sunday best:” no spaghetti straps, or shorts, dresses below the knees, covered shoulders, no slogans. While you are God’s beautiful gift, please be mindful that the assembly should focus on what you “proclaim” and not on “you” personally.
  • If there is only one Lector, you do everything: read the them, first and second readings, petitions, and announcement. However, you do not carry in the Book of the Gospels.
  • Thus, the first lector reads the Introduction to the Mass and the First Reading. The second lector reads the second reading, the petitions in the Prayer of the Faithful, and the announcements at the end of Mass.

Thanks for your service to your parish!
